Years ago I had an Idea, what if you could customize what you craft in MMO's. Not just by selecting the materials to be crafted but controling the shape of a weapon and the shape having an effect on how that object performs. I wrote off this idea saying it was ludicrus, until the dawn of the voxel era. This opened a lot of doors in my opinion and I decided that now was the time to share my Ideas.
First off, the materials of a weapon would have an effect on how it performs. for melee weapons, copper would allow for fast weapon swings so you could attack a lot of times in a row, but because it isn't very heavy it would lessen the damage per attack, iron would deliver a lot of damage per attack but it wouldn't attack very fast. The shape of a weapon would affect it's damage too. You could make a flat-sided cube hammer and it would do blunt damage, blunt damage would ignore armor but it would have low overall damage. You could pinch the sides of the hammer to make an axe would do cutting damage, cutting damage would do the most overall damage, but be lessened by the armor of an enemy. Or you could pinch the top of it to make a spear which would do piercing damage, piercing damage would have low damage and be affected by armor, but it would wound an enemy which would cause damage over time and make them slower.
Second you could make a handel for it and mark a part of the handle as the spot where the player would grip the handle. A one-handed weapon could be dual-wielded, but would deliver a fraction of the damage of a two-handed weapon would deliver but it would also be faster. The position of the handle would affect the weapon's performance, the further the grip is from the part that does damage, the more damage it would do while lowering the speed of attack, and vice-versa.
